Worked example
You resign on Thu, 1 Oct, 2026 with a 30-day notice period, and your company counts the resignation day as day one.
| Resignation date | Thu, 1 Oct, 2026 |
| + 30 days − 1 | Fri, 30 Oct, 2026 |
| Days in the notice period | 30 |
| Want to leave on | Tue, 20 Oct, 2026 |
| Days short | 10 |
| Buyout: ₹60,000 ÷ 30 × 10 | ₹20,000 |
With two months' notice from Thu, 15 Oct, 2026, the last day is Mon, 14 Dec, 2026: the day before the same date two months later. A 90-day notice from Thu, 1 Oct, 2026 ends on Tue, 29 Dec, 2026.
How it's calculated
Most companies count the day you resign as the first day of your notice. With a 30-day notice period starting on 1 October, your last working day is 30 October.
Last working day = resignation date + notice days − 1
- Notice in months runs to the day before the same date: resign on 15 October with two months' notice, and your last day is 14 December.
- Starting the next day: some companies start the notice the day after you resign, which moves the last day one day later. Use the switch to match yours.
- Calendar days: weekends and public holidays inside the notice period count towards it. If the last day falls on a weekend, the calculator tells you.
Buying out your notice
If you need to leave sooner, many companies let you pay for the days you don't serve. It's usually your monthly salary divided by 30, for each day short. Whether that's basic or gross salary depends on your appointment letter.
Notice buyout = monthly salary ÷ 30 × days not served
For most private-sector jobs in India, no law fixes the notice an employee must give: it comes from your appointment letter, the company's policy or its standing orders. The calculator follows the usual practice described above.
